Cybersecurity Coordinator Recalled - Hamish Hansford Serves Interim
Air Marshal Darren Goldie, appointed in July, has been recalled from his role as National Cyber Security Coordinator over a workplace matter during his Defence tenure. Hamish Hansford will act in his place, a move that could impact the 2030 Cyber Security Strategy amid rising cyber threats.
Appointed to the job as recently as July this year, Air Marshal Darren Goldie has been recalled, with Hamish Hansford to act as National Cyber Security Coordinator in the interim.
Darren Goldie led Australian cyber security responses to the Optus hack and the DP World attack earlier this year.
In a statement, the Australian Defence Force said
"National Cyber Security Coordinator, Air Marshal Darren Goldie, AM, CSC, has been recalled to Defence to deal with a workplace matter related to his time in Defence"
The ABC has reported the initial disclosure of the recall of Mr. Goldie from his prominent position, which is adjacent to Minister for Cyber Security Clare O'Neill. This revelation has substantiated that Defence was made aware of a complaint regarding alleged past behavior by Air Marshal Goldie within the past week.
Subsequently, Defense Minister Richard Marles and Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil were apprised before the formal procedure was initiated to reassign the former RAAF Air Commander to the Defense sector. This relocation facilitates addressing the matter through the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) disciplinary system.
The Federal Government's 2030 Cyber Security Strategy faces a potential credibility setback following Air Marshal Darren Goldie's sudden recall.
The gravity of this situation is heightened, especially given the increased volatility in Australia's cybersecurity landscape during this tumultuous year.
The surge in major cyber incidents, including the Optus hack, DP World attack, and Department of Home Affairs attack, exacerbates the challenges faced in maintaining robust cybersecurity measures.
